The Jesuits occupied Požega in the end of the 17th century and began their missionary, educational and cultural work. They founded a grammar school in1699- only the fifth in Croatia which transformed into a university (“Academia posegana”) and already in 1740 in the building of Jesuits’ college, the city’s first pharmacy was opened. A special building was built in 1726 for purposes of the grammar school and in 1877 another building was put up with an astronomical observatory. In that time the grammar school got its solemn flag.
