The Turks seized Požega in 1537 and during the 150- year- long rule they held their garrison in the fortress. Požega became the center of the Požega Sanjak which bordered between Sava and Danube, in the West from Psunj and Virovitica to Vukovar in the East. Settling down Muslim population and building mosques and housings, the city became the most powerful center of the Ottoman Slavonia.
The fights for the Slavonian liberation from the Ottoman rule began within the Hungarian- Ottoman War (1683- 1699). The Turk troops marked their first defeat in Europe in the region around Požega in 1687, so that Požega was finally liberated in the decisive battle on 12 March 1688 by citizens led by friar Luka Ibrišimović which meant the absolute liberation from the Ottoman regime. The command of the imperial council was established with its supervisor (provisor) who had his office, charged taxes for the royal treasury and influenced local authorities until the middle of the 18th century.
